Tents

from: Forsgrens

If buildings were to grow naturally, as say trees, then tents would be like the mushrooms of the forest, appearing overnight, seen briefly, and then vanishing just as quickly, with no permanent record. Originally a mainstay shelter of nomadic man, it started to be replaced by homes, temples, palaces or anything of a sturdier material. As the buildings of wood, stone and marble started increasing in popularity and size, for no apparent reason, so did the tent.

Perhaps the biggest and grandest pergola belonged to Alexander the Great. He made a marriage tent that hung from 50 thirty-foot columns of silver and gold, making it large enough to house 100 couches and host 9,000 friends. The roof was a dome and had amazing portrayals of the sun, moon, stars and all of the deities of heaven. It was named the cosmic tent and went on to inspire Nero to build one just like it. Luckily, it does not need to be that spectacular or big to get the job of sheltering done.

With all of the pomp and circumstance that can be associated with tents being used on parade grounds or for an outdoor wedding reception, you may not realize exactly how versatile a tent can be. They are used at county fairs, at golf tournaments, at The Worlds Fair and for perhaps the best use of all, as part of ones camping gear. Surely a tent is among the equipment.

If you have never shopped for a tent before and are considering one for an upcoming camping excursion, then try to remember a few key points. You'll want to make sure that it is durable and will last, so reinforced seams are a great idea for all tents. And even though you are camping, that doesn't mean you have to forego all the comforts of home. For sleeping, air mattresses are nice, but they also take up valuable floor space. If the manufacturer says it will hold 4 people comfortably, go bigger to allow for comfort. And last but certainly not least, practice putting up the tent at home before you go camping.
